  • ABOUT DIRECTOR EVALUATION

Director Evaluation provides clear feedback to directors and boards on their performance. This feedback fosters communication and professional development and is an essential step towards good governance.

Director Evaluation has developed a range of web-based tools to assist in the evaluation and development of directors and senior management. These are all designed to be user-friendly systems that provide comprehensive, yet clear and simple feedback.

All the systems provide feedback from a range of individuals and perspectives – this is called multi-rater feedback.

One of the many benefits of the system is that it allows the Chairperson to focus on the critically important task of providing feedback and to be freed up from the administrative work.

The range of Director Evaluation feedback systems

The range of systems available is:

    • The Full Board Evaluation – available in versions for: corporates, small to medium enterprise and not-for-profit organisations
    • Chairperson Evaluation
    • The Non-Executive Director Evaluation
    • The Executive Director Evaluation
    • Chief Executive Officer Evaluation
    • Management’s Feedback to the Board

  • MAXIMISING VALUE FROM DIRECTOR EVALUATIONS

To get the most out of your Director Evaluations the board should do the following.

Use evaluations as a development tool

Director Evaluations should be used as a basis for planning professional development. Individual directors and the board as a whole should use their evaluation reports to plan training, coaching and other development for the upcoming year.

    Link to board succession planning

The board should ensure that there are clear links between Director Evaluation and succession planning. The board can ask, “What are the gaps between our current skill set and the skills we need on the board to achieve more sustained organisational growth?” This can lead to identifying critical gaps that the board can fill next time there is a vacancy.

Link the process with strategic initiatives

The board should ensure that their Director Evaluations link to the strategic initiatives. For example if the organisation has a strategy of acquisitions then a careful review of the board expertise in this area should be undertaken.

    Conclusion

There is a growing awareness of the need for director evaluation and the process has significant benefits for the board, management and the organisation as a whole. These benefits can be maximised if the chairperson carefully manages the process and it leads to building board skills in critical strategic areas.

  • TESTIMONIAL

    Christne Scott

Director Evaluation has been an invaluable tool to improving the effectiveness of our Board. Assessing all aspects of good governance, it provides a disciplined, balanced approach to evaluating the board as a whole as well as the contribution of individual members, providing us with the platform to enhance board performance. The system itself is simple to use and provides analysis and reports we can really use. Our directors feel very positive about the experience and the learnings that will steer us closer to ‘best practice’.
